According to the UN's Hunger Report, this term refers to the severe food insecurity experienced by populations, causing them to go without eating for entire days. This can be due to various reasons such as lack of financial means, limited access to food, or other resource constraints.

Around the world, more than enough food is produced to feed the global population—but as many as 829 million people still go hungry. After steadily declining for a decade, world hunger is on the rise, affecting nearly 10% percent of people globally. From 2019 to 2022, the number of undernourished people grew by as many as 150 million, a crisis driven largely by conflict, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

In communities worldwide, hunger is affecting the most vulnerable groups, including children, widows, widowers, and the elderly. Nigeria, being the most populous country in Africa, is particularly grappling with severe levels of hunger.
